That laundry you are attempting to wash up, does it really end up clean? Well not if you are placing dirty underwear with the other clothes you are washing. That is how fecal matter gets onto other clothes even if your dirty underwear does not appear to be dirty, but it is! And the bacteria will grow in your washing machine too. So the best thing to do is always wash that underwear separately with piping hot or bleach to kill the bacteria.
