Vanilla
Real vanilla comes from a tropical flower. Vanilla beans are the only source for the aromatic spice, but it’s quite expensive. There’s no way all the vanilla flavored treats, ice creams, cakes, and desserts out there are made with authentic vanilla bean.
The industry uses artificial vanilla flavoring, and you’ll never guess where it comes from. The compound is called castoreum, and it’s got from the anal mucus of beavers. Ain’t that something?
