Alcohol or Drug Abuse
A study from the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) supports previous reports that adolescents with bipolar disorder are at an increased risk for smoking and substance abuse. About 50 percent of people with bipolar disorder also have a substance abuse problem, particularly with alcohol. Some researchers suggest that substance abuse occurs when the disorder becomes vulnerable to an episode.
