Sleeping on your stomach will actually do a lot of damage to your back, and sleeping on your back is what is best to keep your back and spine aligned. Your back and spine are not in natural positions when you sleep on your stomach or even sides and that will only cause you to wake up feeling numb. And back problems will result as well.
If you have to sleep on your stomach, then the best thing to do is to place 2 pillows underneath your body. Put one under your pelvis and another under your head which will help keep the back and spine in a better position.
